Tangent is out now and is one of the front runners for best compilation of 2024 – with rarities galore selected by renowned diggers and DJs, John Gomez and Nick The Record, who run the aforementioned parties.
To celebrate ten years of one of London’s most loved underground club nights, Mr Bongo have launched what promises to be a new compilation series, with these choices of favorites from the Tangent dancefloor. Kajou’s Tet Chajé is on there, probably the only way to possess this on vinyl without paying mega-bucks, a glorious jam that was recorded in Haiti and epitomises the breadth and depth of the music on offer.
Friends for close to 20 years, John and Nick’s musical knowledge and powers know no bounds. John is a long-standing NTS Radio resident and compiler for Music From Memory. Nick forged his reputation over several decades as the UK’s go-to record dealer via the DJ Friendly website, as a resident DJ since the ‘90s at one of Japan’s pioneering parties, Life Force, as well as being one half of edit label, Record Mission, with Dan Tyler of the Idjut Boys.
In 2014, the pair started Tangent at underground clubbing institution, Plastic People, with the party blooming from a small gathering of friends, to an established highlight in London’s nightlife, always maintaining a strict no guest DJ policy. Their freedom in their selections leads to music like PERIKAS’ Laberinto being a dance unifying staple.
“As London’s clubs have become increasingly reliant on international guests, we wanted to emphasise the importance of a club night growing through its residents.”
Other selections include Cameroonian hip-house with King B.’s Love is Crazy, the rousing Amek Amek by L’Innovateur Djoe Ahmed et le Zoukabyle, the soulful, Caribbean-influenced Bel Ti Négress by Champagn’ and Pellegrin El Kady’s cosmic Seiva de Carnaval. There’re also contemporary choices, such as mind boggling lovers rock from Thailand:
