An amazing talent has emerged on the global scene from Alexandra Township in Johannesburg – Marcus Harvey’s beautiful new EP is entitled You Still Don’t Know Me and describes falling in love and combatting life’s adversities.
The EP is an overall ode to a future lover, but also examines society’s role in gaslighting social issues, such as poverty, unemployment, drug and alcohol abuse. Marcus describes his own experiences and offers a remedy in the soul of his music. You Wouldn’t Understand is one of the highlights, showcasing his beautiful voice:
His own township is one of the poorest in the country and is where Marcus took his first musical steps at his mother’s shebeen (a licensed, but informal, township drinking spot), while he helped her sell beers. Customers would play their favourite songs on the jukebox and Marcus would sing along.
After spending years producing beats with friends on Fruityloops, he started impressing at open mic sessions. Four days after the release of his debut album, I Am Marcus Harvey, You Don’t Know Me Yet, it made waves on the Apple Music Top Charts, sitting on position 75 on the Top 200 Charts and position 3 on the Alternative Top Charts.
